The truth is Valerie and Anya were asleep on the bridge as the Tanmesad drifting into the Beta Quadrant. Anya, especially at the Operations console should have seen the smoke bleeding out of the ship but this was the night shift on a Friday in an uneventful week. Valerie awoke as Gul Vash Enranet came onto the bridge. Vash smiled, "Good night, Lt. Commander."

Valerie gathered her uniform and stood up, "Nothing to report, sir."

=/= Vash, you'd better get down here, NOW!! =/=

Carson's voice boomed through the comm-link. Vash and Valerie, still wiping sleep from her eyes went down to engineering. Carson looked at Vash sternly.

"We have a bad coolant leak and have had for about 2.5 hours.", Carson glared at Valerie and Anya.

"So what is the best course of action?", Vash asked.

"To catch it when its small and fuse the tubes.", Carson snapped.

"There is no need for sarcasm, Mr. Warren.", Valerie retorted.

"What are you going to do?", Vash asked.

"What I would normally do is contact Star Fleet and get a new part delivered or worst case scenario contact the Cardassian Guard and get one from them but your illustrious Phoenix Federation is at war with the Federation. They would not be able to get us one and your behavior with the Cardassians makes them not a viable option either.", Carson snarled.

"Suggestions?", Vash looked around.

Tania had joined them after Carson had taken the ship to red alert. She smiled, "Run on impulse power for all eternity."

Carson did not take kindly to her making light of the situation. He grumbled something and went over to the engineering console. Vash walked over, "We cannot run on impulse power for all eternity."

Tania looked over, "What about putting a sleeve over the leaking coolant tube?"

"It would work but the radiation would assuredly cause cancerous cell growth in the installation crew.", Carson reminded the Borg Disconnect.

"I could help. I would be immuned.", Tania quickly responded.

"Agreed, but you would need specialist assistance. I would have to go as well as Marissa Lyun and the android Candi.", Carson responded.

"Marissa would have to be clearly informed of the risks involved and the resulting treatment.", Carson ordered.

"I will summon the doctor.", Tania responded.

Dr. T'Vol met with the entire group. Cancer in 2386 is not fatal. It remains an abnormal growth of cells, capable of creating tumors which if the right place could prove debilitating and fatal. Dr. T'Vol was totally honest. Marissa looked at Carson terrified.

"We cannot make you go, Lieutenant.", Carson reminded his officer and girlfriend.

"We have to do, C. We have to.", Marissa responded.

EVP suits are incredible but this is venting radioactive coolant. Tania and Candi worked together to wrap the tube while Carson and Marissa secured the wrap and verified the flow. The work was almost anti-climactic. Candi and Tania are very strong and could hold the coating in place while it was attached by Marissa and Carson.

Dr. T'Vol was waiting as they removed the suits. Marissa and Carson were wisked into sick bay. The symptoms of the exposure included fever, hair loss, infections, bloody vomit and stools. The Nausea and vomiting occurred in less than 1 hour after exposure and was severe.

Valerie stood outside watching as Marissa and Carson took turns vomiting. She was most worried. She did not get many bridge command sessions. Carson came over to the containment room window and put his hand on the window.

"This was not your fault, Valerie. Don't take it personally. You will make a fine bridge commander.", Carson smiled.

Valerie smiled back as Carson vomitted on the glass. She had learned a valuable lesson here. No one sleeps on the bridge... Ever.
